Have you ever eaten a burger or fries wrapped in bright white paper? That paper might look clean, but sometimes it contains hidden chemicals called fluorescent whitening agents (FWAs). These are also sometimes called “brighteners” or “optical whiteners.”
What’s the Problem?
These chemicals are added to make paper look extra white and bright. The problem? They can move from the paper into your food, especially if the food is:
- Hot (like fresh pizza or fried chicken)
- Oily (like burgers, fries, or pastries)
- Wet (like sandwiches or juicy fruits)
Why Should We Worry?
Scientists have found some worrying things about these whitening chemicals:
- They Might Make You Sick: Some studies suggest that eating small amounts of these chemicals over a long time could be harmful. They might damage your cells or even cause health problems like liver issues. While more research is needed, it’s better to be safe.
- They Don’t Belong in Food: Your body isn’t meant to eat these chemicals. They aren’t food! Good food packaging should protect your meal, not add strange things to it.
- Rules Aren’t Always Followed: Many countries (like China and in Europe) ban or strictly limit these whitening chemicals in food packaging. But tests sometimes still find them, especially in cheap packaging or from small street vendors.

How Can You Be Safer?
- Look for “Food Grade”: Choose packaging clearly marked “food grade” or “food safe.”
- Avoid Super-White Paper: If the paper looks unusually bright or blue-ish white, it might have whitening agents. Natural paper is usually slightly off-white.
- Check for a Plastic Lining: Packaging with a thin plastic or wax lining (like many burger wrappers or coffee cups) helps block chemicals from moving into food. Plain paper without lining is riskier.
- Don’t Keep Hot/Oily Food in Paper Too Long: The longer hot, greasy food touches the paper, the more chance chemicals have to move into it.
The Good News!
Safe, high-quality food packaging does not need these whitening agents. Paper can be made safe and clean-looking without them.
For example, our food-grade white card is made safely. It contains NO fluorescent whitening agents and passes strict food safety tests and certifications worldwide. You can trust it to protect your food without adding unwanted chemicals.
